It contains content which reflects topics covered by the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Ten Steps (for maternity) and Seven Point Plan (for community) to Successful Breastfeeding. "This workbook constitutes an excellent resource for pre and post registration health practitioners. The workbook provides the curriculum component for meeting the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) best practice standards for the education of student midwives and health visitors.

Following an informative introduction there are seven sections that cover key curriculum areas: the value of breast milk; who breastfeeds?; anatomy and physiology; positioning and attachment; breastfeeding difficulties and challenges; and supporting breastfeeding. Each of these sections commences with learning outcomes and contents. The sessions then provide a blend of theory and case study with sections to be completed by the participant. These sections include narrative responses and quiz style checklists. These require the participant to both read further and to reflect upon practice in order to complete the sections and, in this way, the approach encourages critical engagement with the material thus optimizing learning.

The section entitled Breastfeeding Clinic, in which a series of case studies and excellent supporting photographs are presented, provides an outstanding learning opportunity related to breastfeeding challenges and difficulties and their resolution. The resource section includes references, further reading, videos etc. The appendices include a form for recording evidence of continuing professional development and an evaluation sheet.

This is an outstanding, evidenced-based resource that I would thoroughly recommend it for pre-registration health practitioner education and, for those who have missed such an opportunity, for post-registration education."
